Beloved Community Cornerstone, Jerome’s Furniture, is More Thank Pink at the 2017 Race for the Cure

The Jerome’s Furniture Team gathers for a picture at the 2017 Race for the Cure.

Jerome’s Furniture is dedicated to helping women and men in San Diego County who are affected by breast cancer, inspired by their own battles with this disease. Their continuous collaboration in the fight against breast cancer goes above and beyond at the Race for the Cure. Not only are they a 2017 Race for the Cure Local Presenting and Packet Pickup Sponsor they are also the exclusive Sleep in for the Cure sponsor. We are very grateful for their continued support, because together we are stronger in the fight.

Jerome’s Furniture’s partnership with Komen San Diego was inspired by the two sisters of the well-known and family-run San Diego company. One of the “Jerome’s” sisters, Annie Navarra was diagnosed in 1990 at the age of 42 and underwent a mastectomy followed by chemotherapy and radiation. Back in 1990, the breast cancer landscape was very different and her treatment was considered radical by today’s standards. Annie remembers how overwhelming the experience was, to follow all the instructions her doctors threw at her.

“I relied heavily on my sister and family for their support,” said Navarra. “I realize that there are women out there that don’t have the support I had but that is where Komen steps in.”

Twenty-two years later, Annie’s sister, Adeline Williams found a lump in her breast, but three different doctors told her it was just a cyst and she had nothing to worry about. They all told her they were 90 percent sure it was nothing. Adeline knew that even though it was benign she could not live with a lump so she asked to have it removed. Only then did they find out it was actually cancerous. She wants women to trust themselves, understand and know their bodies and advocate for their own health, like she did.

“We are family owned and operated which means we support not only our own family, but our community family as well,” said Jerry Navarra, Annie and Adeline’s brother and Chairman of the Board of Jerome’s Furniture. “It was a no brainer to partner with Komen San Diego after finding out they support women just like my sisters get through their own battles by providing services they might not otherwise be able to afford.”

In San Diego, six women a day are diagnosed with breast cancer and one woman passes away. Komen San Diego conducts a study of San Diego County every four years to formulate a community profile, which detects the gaps in breast cancer care and the barriers to health access. Komen San Diego then provides the community with breast health services to fill the gap and increase access to early detection and quality treatment–from free mammograms, transportation, meal deliveries, financial assistance and more.

“Our vision is a world without breast cancer. Thanks to corporate partners, like Jerome’s Furniture, who share our values and commitment to the San Diego community, we are able to provide live-saving support to those affected by breast cancer,” said Shaina Gross, president and CEO of Susan G. Komen San Diego.
