18 Jul Renowned UCSD Oncologist, Dr. Barbara A. Parker, Joins Susan G. Komen® San Diego’s Board of Directors
We are thrilled to announce that renowned UCSD oncologist, Dr. Barbara A. Parker, has joined Susan G. Komen San Diego’s Board of Directors!
Until December 2018, Dr. Parker served as the Medical Director of Oncology Services and Senior Deputy Director of Cancer Medicine at the University of California San Diego (UCSD) Moores Cancer Center. In this capacity, she provided leadership in execution of the clinical strategic plan, operational oversight, development of the Cancer Cabinet disease team structure, and quality management of multidisciplinary cancer care.
Dr. Parker is a clinical professor of medicine with a faculty practice focused on breast cancer and a research program focused on personalized approaches for breast cancer including screening, prevention, novel therapies, and survivorship. Since 2009, she has led UCSD’s collaboration with the Athena Breast Health Program across the five University of California comprehensive cancer centers. Her research has been funded by the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, NCI/NIH, and philanthropic partnerships. She has served on the Board of Directors of National Comprehensive Cancer Network and the Alliance Clinical Trials Group, as well as multiple leadership committees at UCSD Health, UCSD Moores Cancer Center, and the UCSD School of Medicine. Thus, she was selected for the Excellence in Stewardship Award for building strong community philanthropic partnerships in April, 2014.
Annually since 2006, Dr. Parker has been named a “Top Doc” in San Diego Magazine’s “Physicians of Exceptional Excellence” by the San Diego County Medical Society and was named the UCSD “Attending Physician of the Year” in 2009. Additionally, Dr. Parker was awarded the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award from the Arnold P. Gold Foundation for exemplary compassionate clinical care and received the UCSD Moores Cancer Center Inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition for her outstanding service in December, 2018.
Dr. Parker is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. She received her MD from Stanford University Medical School where she pursued additional research training through the National Institutes of Health Medical Scientist Training Program. She is board certified in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology and received her postgraduate training in both specialties at University of California San Diego (UCSD).
Dr. Parker also spoke at Komen San Diego’s 1st Annual Metastatic Breast Cancer Conference in 2018. She dedicated her career toward finding the cures and most effective treatments for breast cancer and has become one of the most renowned breast cancer specialists in the United States. We are honored Dr. Parker has agreed to join our Board of Directors and look forward to her impact in helping Komen San Diego most effectively serve San Diego County.
