Komen Mission Investment Facts
Since our founding in 1982, we’ve invested more than $2.2 billion to mission. This includes more than $750 million to breast cancer research, making Komen the largest nonprofit funder of breast cancer research outside of the U.S. government.
Komen’s financial stewardship and the depth and breadth of Komen’s mission means that millions of women are alive today, with a better quality of life and more options for breast cancer treatment than ever before. The need remains very great, however, with one in eight women still facing a breast cancer diagnosis in her lifetime.
During FY2012, Komen spent 83 cents of every dollar invested in mission, marking the eighth straight year we spent more than 80 percent on mission programs.
- Audited financial results show that Komen invested $318 million into all mission-specific programs in FY2012. This included $69 million invested in research programs in FY2012, and $249 million invested into community outreach, which includes screening, education and treatment programs for low-income and uninsured women nationwide – nearly $159 million of which was invested by our Affiliate Network in their local communities.
- Komen funded more than 150 new research grants in FY12, growing our research investment to more than $750 million since our founding in 1982.
- Komen paid for more than 700,000 breast screenings in 2011 for low-income and uninsured women, and provided financial aid and psychosocial support programs to more than 100,000 women, while providing educational resources to another 4.2 million.
