Team Chicks with Picks: Dental Hygienists Walking with a Purpose
Judy Peacock, a 23-year breast cancer survivor, began her journey with Komen San Diego at the very first Race for the Cure 5k in October of 1995 and has continued every year since. In 2003, she organized a group of Dental Hygienists (and friends) to come together and make a difference in the community by joining her at the Race. She founded the team Chicks with Picks and since then the Race has become a community health project for the San Diego County Dental Hygienists’ Society.
In the team’s tenth year participating, it has grown and evolved to over 38 members consisting of seasoned dental hygienists to dental hygiene students and professors from Southwestern College. The team has collectively raised close to $5,000. They recruit team members through their Dental Hygiene meetings as well as through the Society’s published newsletter.
When asked why Judy is so passionate about leading team Chicks with Picks she claimed, “it is the fact that we are seeing so many more survivors and we are able to give hope and support to those going through treatment…whether it be a patient, family member or friend”.
Thank you team Chicks with Picks, Komen San Diego greatly appreciates your commitment to the Race and the women we serve locally. We are looking forward to seeing your team at the Race on November 3!
